Description: Have you heard that the 2018 Farm Bill has legalized Industrial Hemp as a crop, and that North Carolina operated a Hemp Pilot Program under the auspices of the former Farm Bill as well? Are you curious about whether Hemp could have a place in your farm’s crop rotations? Can growing Hemp generate a profit for High Country Farms? What do the legal and market landscapes look like for Hemp production in 2019? Are there unique risks or challenges in growing and marketing Hemp in the NC High Country? Find out the answers to these and related questions you may have at a free meeting on Hemp Production Information during the afternoon of Wednesday, 1/30/19, organized by NC Cooperative Extension. The Hemp Production Information meeting will take place from 1:00-4:00 p.m. at the Community space of Family Central (626 Ashe Central School Rd, Jefferson, NC 28640) on Wednesday, January 30 2019. Featured speakers will include Margaret Bloomquist and Leonora Stefanile of NC State University’s New Crops & Organics Program (which has been growing Hemp as part of the Research / Pilot Program since 2017), Richard Boylan of NC Cooperative Extension, Dwayne Tate of the North Carolina Department of Agriculture, and several other experienced local growers, buyers and processors from North Carolina’s emerging Hemp industry. Topics covered will include variety choices, production techniques, pests and diseases, legal issues to navigate, economics, and markets. To register (in order to be sure of enough seating and handouts), please contact NC Cooperative Extension’s Ashe County Center by e-mailing jessica_hodgson-ham@ncsu.edu or by calling 336-846-5850. There is no fee for attending the meeting, and all interested growers from the region are welcome.
